George Singer

Singer’s life and lasting achievement is worthy of a novel.  Here was a lad born in rural Dorset in 1847 who came to the Midlands in 1869 after an apprenticeship in Naval engineering in the East End of London.  By dint of seizing his opportunities, hard work, and a fastidious attention to detail and quality, young George Singer soon established a thriving cycle manufacturing business which became globally renowned.  As Chief Magistrate and Mayor of Coventry for three consecutive years, his public life was noted for championing the underdog, where his ground-breaking philanthropy justly earned him a lasting and celebrated legacy not only in Coventry but also throughout England.
